Holding of a Seminar on Challenges and Future Prospects of the Affairs in Rakhine State

             The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission held a seminar on 11 October 2017 at the Summit Parkview Hotel, titled, “Challenges and Future Prospects of the Affairs in Rakhine State”. The seminar was based on the concept of independent thinking and exchange of ideas with the view to assist the State in finding a solution to the affairs in Rakhine State.

            The seminar was participated by the Chairman and Members of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, persons with experiences well versed in the affairs of Rakhine, representatives of local NGOs and interested persons. During the course of the opening address, the Chair of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission stressed that the discussions of the experienced participants well versed in subject matters related to Rakhine State will enhance the understanding of the affairs and thereby be of great benefit in finding a solution.

            The first part of the seminar was based on the subject of Stability of Rakhine State. The Vice Chair of the Commission U Sit Myaing, acted as moderator and Commission Member U Yu Lwin Aung, presented “the findings of the visit by the team from the Commission to Rakhine State on 24-29 September 2017”. It was followed by a presentation from U Maung Maung Ohn, Chief Minister of Rakhine State (Retired) who recounted his experiences concerning his efforts for stability and development of Rakhine State. Myanmar Media Council’s Vice Chairman (1) U Aung Hla Tun, then discussed on the affairs of Rakhine State and the role of the Media. After the presentations, questions were asked, analysis and recommendations were made.

            The second part of the seminar, dealt on the effects of the affairs of Rakhine State on the international relations with Myanmar. The Chair of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission U Win Mra acted as moderator of this session. Commission Member U Nyunt Swe made a presentation on “The Relations between Myanmar and the United Nations” while U Ko Ko Hlaing, a researcher in International Affairs presented “The Relations between Myanmar and other countries including Bangladesh”. U Ba Hla Aye, Member of Myanmar Institute of Strategic Studies (MISIS), then presented “The Relations between Myanmar and ASEAN/ EU”. After the presentations, questions were asked and analysis and recommendations were made.

            Then overview of the discussions, analysis and recommendations was made by the participants.
